RV Mattress Topper: The Basics
Before diving into the reviews, I am going to touch on some basic information which you need to know before buying a camper mattress topper.
What is An RV Mattress Topper?
A mattress topper is an extra cushion layer that goes on top of your mattress with the purpose to noticeably change the firmness level of a mattress. With the help of a mattress topper, we are able to make our mattress surface feel softer or firmer than it normally does to enhance the mattress comfort as well as our sleeping experience.
Besides changing the feel of our current bed, a mattress topper can also protect the mattress surface from wear and tear which ultimately prolongs the mattress lifespan. Some toppers are designed to rest right on top of the mattress, while others come with elastic straps to secure it with the mattress.
Designed for use on the road, RV mattress toppers are usually shorter or narrower than standard sizes to adapt to the cramped space in a recreational vehicle. Mattress toppers for campers are also lighter and more versatile compared to the regular ones. But with all other characteristics the same, we still can use regular mattress toppers on motorhomes if they fit with your current RV mattress and bed frame.
Mattress toppers for RV beds are commonly constructed from a variety of materials that cushion and contour to the body such as memory foam, wool, feather, cotton, or latex. There are even hybrids that combine materials for comfort and support, cooling options which better serve the needs of users.
The mattress toppers are physically thin mattresses which come in a range of thicknesses and densities to meet a range of needs. Most toppers have thickness varying from 1 to 4 inches while their densities usually ranges from 3-6 lbs per cubic ft
Unlike a mattress pad or protector, toppers aren’t designed with intention to protect a mattress from liquids or other contaminants. It’s highly recommended to use a mattress topper in conjunction with a mattress protector.
The mattress protector is placed over the topper to help hold it in place, and to protect the topper from body fluids and dust mites because it’s washable and easy to clean.
Benefits of RV mattress toppers
Improve support to the body
By pairing your mattress with a good mattress topper, you could enhance the amount of support available to your body. Mattress toppers also contour to sleeping postures which means your neck, head and back would be well-supported throughout the night.
Boost the comfort level
You find your mattress to be a bit too firm/soft and that affects your level of comfort? Then you may want to buy a camper mattress topper at the earliest opportunity.
For firm mattresses, feather mattress toppers with marshmallow-soft surfaces should be great choices. On the other hand, regarding soft mattresses, mattress toppers made from memory foam tend to come in handy.
Temperature control
Thanks to the ability to regulate heat and cold, mattress toppers excel at keeping the temperature under control. In the case that you regularly experience temperature deviations at night, you won’t regret buying a mattress topper.
Extend the lifespan of mattresses
Mattress toppers not only keep people happy but also help lengthen the longevity of mattresses. In use, mattress toppers keep moisture, dust, mites and others out of mattresses so you don’t have to spend much money on mattress replacements.
Other extra features
Certain mattress toppers use natural plant oil to replace some of the traditional petroleum in the formula which makes them more environmentally friendly. Aside from that, to keep the atmosphere around the mattresses fresh, some models incorporate green tea extracts as well.
Interestingly, by making use of activated charcoal, a couple of mattress toppers would even get rid of moisture and bacteria at the same time. That is a big plus if you don’t want to deal with allergic reactions.
Types of RV mattress toppers
Travel trailer mattress toppers come in all shapes and sizes but it’s possible to split market models into the types down below
Memory foam mattress toppers
As the name suggests, memory foam mattress toppers could “remember” the posture of sleepers and shape themselves accordingly. Because of that, toppers of the type guarantee consistent support to all body parts no matter the sleeping style.
Naturally, camper owners that suffer from joint pains hold memory foam mattress toppers in high esteem. It’s worth pointing out that memory foam retains heat though so people may feel kind of hot on occasions.
Egg crate foam mattress toppers
Egg crate foam mattress toppers earn their name from the bumps on the surface that resemble egg cartons. When people lie down, toppers of the type conform to their body for all-around support.
Thus, egg crate foam mattress toppers easily relieve sores and aches that plague the body of sleepers. Since mattress toppers with egg crate foam reach the market at reasonable costs, they suit the wallet of most RVers.
Gel memory foam mattresses
Made with gel beads, gel memory foam mattress toppers facilitate airflow around the clock. Hence, toppers of the type receive a shower of praises from RVing enthusiasts that keep waking up covered in sweat.
Also, with outstanding responsiveness, gel memory foam mattress toppers react quickly to body temperature.
Nonetheless, mattress toppers that incorporate gel memory foam don’t come cheap so they require budget consideration.
Latex mattress toppers
Owing to their hypoallergenic attributes, latex mattress toppers effectively and efficiently keep antigens out of the mattresses. Naturally, campers owners that have allergies think highly of toppers of the type.
Moreover, latex mattress toppers adapt well so they give a good account of themselves on numerous mattresses. About shortcoming, latex emits odors that take a bit of time to go away.
Feather mattress toppers
Able to make RVers feel like they sleep on clouds, feather mattress toppers outperform their contemporaries in terms of softness.
Therefore, once it comes to softening firm mattresses, toppers of the type prove ideal. However, the use of feathers leads to irritation of respiratory tracts.
Few brands make feather mattress toppers so RVers don’t have a whole lot of options.
Down alternative mattress toppers
Filled with microfiber filling that happens to be hypoallergenic, down alternative mattress toppers minimize the recurrence of allergic reactions. Toppers of the type trap heat too, hence, they could keep sleepers warm as outside temperature drops.
As a result, full-time RVers who travel extensively often rate down alternative mattress toppers above other models.
Last but not least, owing to their plush nature, mattress toppers with down alternative deliver an excellent degree of comfort.

Why It’s The Best Overall:
Created for optimal sleep experience, ZINUS Green Tea allows me to get quality shut-eye at any point during my travel. The top layer of this topper consists of memory foam that conforms to my posture as soon as I lie down. In addition to that, to keep the sleeper well-supported throughout the night, it places high-density foam at the bottom. Therefore, in my opinion, this mattress topper is the best mattress topper on the market nowadays in terms of all-around performance.
To keep the atmosphere fresh, ZINUS Green Tea makes extensive use of natural additives: green tea extracts and activated charcoal. As a result, this topper seldom develops odor on the road which is advantageous for those with a sensitive sense of smell like me. Also, it could prevent moisture from building up underneath over time. With this RV mattress topper, I don’t have to worry too much about mold when the level of humidity soars all of the sudden.
Since the Zinus mattress topper was rolled, boxed and shipped, I didn’t need to do much to position it on top of my mattress. The moment I cut open the packaging, it quickly expanded and returned to its original shape in a couple of days. Hence, there was no need to alter my travel schedule to match the expansion of the foam. Last but not least, while I noticed a slight smell at first, it went away before long.
In terms of care, I only have to spot clean ZINUS Green Tea every now and then to keep it in top shape. Because of that, I’m able to spend more relaxing and less time taking care of my bed. The exclusive use of foam certified by CertiPURUS means that this topper features a clean safety record as well. Whenever I rest my head, I could rest assured knowing that my health is in good hands.
Available at an economical price, the mattress topper made by Zinus matches my wallet nicely. Upon purchase, it’s accompanied by a five-year manufacturer warranty and that puts me at ease.
I bought this product for my RV. I had tried several other toppers. With this product, I can finally sleep comfortably on my back or side. I honestly was not sure that I could keep going RV-ing, if I could not get a good nights sleep. Now I can. We have a class C RV which means that the bed sort of folds/rolls up, this is no problem. I am 5’5″ and 225lbs and the husband is 6′ and 250lbs. We both have arthritis and general back issues. We both sleep well.

Why It’s The Best Value For The Money:
Dependable and reliable, Linenspa LS30RQ30GT gives a good account of itself in quite a few settings. Thanks to the integration of ultra-plush memory foam, this topper conforms to my body as I sleep. Moreover, at three inches, the thickness of this topper for camper mattress permits equal weight distribution regardless of posture. Needless to say, since I bought it, I have yet to be bothered by sores and aches while traveling.
One of the things I like about the mattress topper of Linenspa is that it’s designed with gel beads. In use, the gel beads would absorb heat which keeps temperature at a reasonable level around the clock. Hence, even as the weather gets hotter and hotter, the odds of me getting overheated tend to be low. That is why once it comes to summer travel, I consider this topper to be the best camper mattress topper for the money.
About ventilation, with its open-cell formula, LS30RQ30GT is capable of facilitating airflow effectively and efficiently. As proof of confidence, Linenspa offers its RV queen mattress topper alongside a three-year warranty. If my topper fails due to manufacturing defects within the warranty period, I could claim a replacement at no charge.
Bought this to go on top of my five-year-old RV mattress, because I could feel every spring. I am amazed at what a difference this makes. I had thought I would probably need a new mattress, and, like everything RV, they’re not cheap. This is maybe an inch shorter than the mattress (which does not seem to be any standard size, another RV feature), but that is not a problem – it’s longer than I am tall. It only took a couple of hours to grow to the full 3″ thickness after unpacking – very convenient. I’m now sleeping a lot better and waking up without all the aches and pains I had before. Outstanding product.

For affordability, Best Price Mattress Topper is not exactly a dirt-cheap product but it’s far from a bank-breaking investment. By making some calculations, I managed to add it to my spending plan while keeping up with other key expenses.
We were skeptical about purchasing this trifold, memory foam mattress. When it arrived, we were concerned it wasn’t the the depth described, when first taken out of its delivery bag, as it was condensed in the bag. Once we cut off the bag surrounding it, and unfolded the mattress; it fully inflated to its claimed density. We were also concerned the mattress would separate at the trifold areas, but it never did. It is made in such a way, you don’t feel the trifold areas at all. It remains a solid one piece, even laid out. We used this on an RV hide-a-bed, and it was exceptionally comfortable for our guests. They stated they had never slept on such a comfortable mattress in their life. We were so impressed with their experience, we decided to test it out for ourselves after they left, and we found it to be a fantastic Memory foam mattress providing a great night’s sleep. It wasn’t too firm, or too soft . . . It was just right! The ease with which this mattress folds up for storage is a snap; and certainly a plus, compared to other awkward-to-store, one piece mattresses. We highly recommend this memory foam mattress to anyone wanting a great night’s sleep, and an easy-to-store solution! Don’t hesitate . . . for the price and for the comfort, this mattress is the very best.

4. Best For Side Sleepers: LUCID Ventilated Gel RV Mattress Topper

- Thickness options: 2″, 3″
- Material: Memory foam
- Pressure-relieving
- Ventilated
- Gel-infused
Why We Love It:
Able to offer pressure-relieving comfort to sleepers of various builds, Lucid LU30QQ30GT is a good buy for full-time RVing. Consisting of memory foam, this topper could conform to my body and keep it supported at all times. Furthermore, since it’s gel-infused, this mattress topper for RV is good at keeping me from getting overheated. Thus, I’m pleased to report that every time I decide to sleep on it, I never wake up covered in sweat.

Because of that, with this topper stopping moisture from building up, mold is less of an issue to me. The excellent ventilation also prevents odor from developing and that is a big plus in draw-out travels. Lastly, this mattress topper dries quickly too so liquid spills rarely put it out of use for long.
To ease handling, Lucid compressed its mattress toppers prior to delivery which made installation a walk in the park. All I had to do was cut open the packaging once this topper sat on top of the bed. The expansion of foam finished in about seventy hours so it was simple to stay on schedule. I did notice a chemical smell coming from this travel trailer mattress topper, nonetheless, it was faint and vanished on its own eventually.
Lucid LU30QQ30GT is a queen-sized topper so it pairs well with the queen mattress on my bed. In spite of the sporadic sliding, this topper usually stays where I set it up as time passes by. That is why could escape the hassle of reorienting my topper in the morning. As this mattress topper is slim and sleek, manipulating it when a need arises is child’s play.
In terms of post-purchase support, LU30QQ30GT is backed with a three-year warranty. While the warranty is unexceptional, it demonstrates the confidence that Lucid places in its mattress topper.
I purchased this topper to improve the comfort of my single, thin RV mattress. It’s very comfortable, especially when paired with a padded mattress cover. The RV mattress was pretty hard; adding this topper made a BIG improvement in the quality of my sleep.
When you receive the topper, it’s all squished and shrink-wrapped. Follow the directions and it should expand properly in less than 24 hours. A few reviews mentioned an odor – I didn’t notice any smell after allowing the expansion of the foam, nor when using it in a small sleeping compartment.
I recommend pairing this with a good mattress pad to protect the foam and enhance your comfort. Enjoy!

Featuring cloud-like softness, this topper for camper mattress is capable of taking all the strains off the body of sleepers. In addition, it aligns my back, spine and shoulder as I sleep so I don’t have to put up with joint pains on the road.
Made from memory foam, the mattress toppers of Classic Brands automatically conform to my body the moment I lie down. Since the foam is certified by CertiPUR-US, the number of allergic reactions I experience while traveling is low. Besides that, at three inches, it only increases the height of my bed slightly so I have no trouble getting on and off the bed. It won’t sink under load, thus, this topper is a good buy for senior RVers.
Regarding temperature regulation, Classic Brands Cool Cloud Gel Topper incorporates a ventilated design that lets airflows move through the foam which dissipates heat. Hence, even during the dog days of summer, I seldom feel stuffy if I opt to sleep on this mattress topper. For a person that periodically travels through regions with high levels of humidity, this topper is a godsend.
Classic Brands Cool Cloud Gel Topper showed up compressed so moving it onto the bed is a piece of cake. Also, it’s worth pointing out that this topper for RV mattress is accompanied by a zipper mesh topper cover upon purchase. Interestingly, thanks to the gripping strength of its cover, this topper is going to stay put throughout the night.
For maintenance, with the cover, Classic Brands is well-protected from stains and requires little care from me. If the cover gets dirty, I just need to throw it into my washing machine.
We got this to enhance our camper mattress. It wound up being a bit larger than the mattress, so we put it underneath. After two camping trips, SO said, “buy one for the bed at home”. The second one came today. Neither one has smelled bad (referring to other reviews). I rolled them both out to expand and air out, and everything has worked according to the directions.

We bought this to put on our brand new RV factory mattress. Thank goodness for this product!! It puffed right up within a couple hours and fit the bed perfectly. No unpleasant smell whatsoever, as other reviewers complained about. And I’m super smell sensitive. It includes a cover, which so many do not and was very important to me. It also has the rubbery bottom that holds to the mattress and prevents it from moving around. Glad we decided on this topper, it was well worth the money and cheaper than many that didn’t have as many perks.

Because of that, following the purchase of this topper, it’s easy for me to get shut-eye in times of need.
One of the things that make me like using the topper from Best Price Mattress is motion isolation. I tend to turn and toss on the bed so I have a concern about waking up my bed partner in the middle of the night. However, with the ability to restrict motion transfer, this topper allows its sleepers to sleep peacefully next to each other. That is advantageous for me who wish to fall asleep besides their spouse and children during outdoor adventures.
For ease of convenience, Best Price Mattress was sold with a zippered cover that keeps its foam out of harm’s way. If I spill something onto the bed by mistake, I just need to clean the topper cover. The cover is hand-wash only which means I have to do washing by myself instead of throwing it into the washing machine with the laundry. About fitness, Best Price Mattress Green Tea Topper fits my mattress snugly so sliding is minimal. As a result, there is no need to spend too much time reorienting it in the morning. Aside from that, once expanded, this topper would accelerate the flow of air in and around the foam. Certified by CertiPUR-US, the Best Price Mattress topper receives a lot of praises for its safety record. In the case that you place health above all else, you should add this topper to your shortlist.

10. WEEKENDER 2 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Key features:
- Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
- Thickness options: 2″
- Material: Memory Foam
- Open-cell memory foam
- Plush
- Compressed prior to delivery
Why We Love It:
Not too thick and not too thin, Weekender WK20QQ30MT is an excellent topper for RVers who want to turn so-so mattresses into sleeping paradises. Created with open-cell memory foam, this camper mattress topper keeps my body supported and cool all night long. Moreover, with plush consistency, it’s capable of revealing pressure to my back, hip and neck. As a result, I could say goodbye to the joint pain which means a lot while exploring the outdoors.
Compressed prior to delivery, the Weekender mattress topper was a breeze to handle so its setup process took me just a bit of time. As soon as I removed the packaging, the foam expanded and I could begin using it after a few days. Throughout the expansion, the foam released a light smell that caused some discomfort at first. That being said, since the smell went away soon after the expansion concluded, my nose didn’t give me a hard time.
No matter how high the level of humidity is, moisture cannot accumulate with the air moving all around WK20QQ30MT unobstructed. Because of that, I could stop mold from growing on my bed with relative that. Besides that, the airflow also helps keep the atmosphere near the mattress fresh around the clock. That is a big plus for a person that travels extensively and likes to sleep in an odorless space like me.
Rated for queen-sized mattresses, Weekender WK20QQ30MT matches all sorts of travel trailer beds including mine. It’s noteworthy that this topper usually stays at one place instead of moving around. Thus, I rarely notice it out of position when I wake up in the morning and that lets me start my day on a good note. Finally, since it’s simple to wash, getting rid of stains following accidents is a piece of cake.
With a lovely white color, Weekender WK20QQ30MT suits the theme of my bedroom nicely. Unsurprisingly, this topper is popular among RVers that place an emphasis on aesthetic values.
Pros:
- Adaptable
- Slim and sleek
- User’s friendly setup process
Cons:
- People report sagging foam on occasions
- Post-purchase support is hardly adequate
Choosing The Best RV Mattress Topper: Buying Criteria
If your mattress topper doesn’t match with your sleeping positions or weight, you may wake up with pain and have trouble sleeping comfortably throughout the night.
This will significantly affect your experience of living on the road which prevents you and your family from enjoying camping life to the fullest.
To find the right fit for your needs and preference, it’s best to take into account a few key performance factors mentioned below:
Size
To get the most out of your soon-to-be purchased mattress topper, it’s essential to know the different RV bed and mattress topper sizes.
Mattress toppers are designed to rest right on top of mattresses for added support and softness, so each mattress size has its own designated topper. For example, if you’re using an RV mattress short queen size, you’ll need a short queen mattress topper to put on top of it. To find the proper size mattress topper for your RV, all you have to do is to measure your mattress’s size and dimensions. Use this measurement to identify the corresponding name on the RV mattress topper size chart below.
Mattress topper sizes can vary between manufacturers, some even intentionally make their toppers slightly smaller than the mattress of same size name. So be sure to double-check measurements with the manufacturer prior to making a mattress topper purchase for your camper.
The following size chart highlights dimensions of popular mattress topper size for RV in both inches and centimeters.
RV Mattress Topper Sizes | Dimensions in Inches | Dimensions in Centimeters |
RV Twin | 28” x 75” 28” x 80” 30” x 72” 30” x 75” 30” x 80” 35” x 75” | 71.1 cm x 190.5 cm 71.1 cm x 203.2 cm 76.2 cm x 182.9 cm 76.2 cm x 190.5 cm 76.2 cm x 203.2 cm 88.9 cm x 190.5 cm |
RV Twin XL | 38” x 79” 39” x 80” | 96.5 cm x 200.7 cm 99.1 cm x 203.2 cm |
RV Full | 53” x 75” 54” x 75” 55” x 75 | 134.6 cm x 190.5 cm 137.2 cm x 190.5 cm 139.7 cm x 190.5 cm |
Three-Quarter | 48” x 75” 48” x 80” | 121.9 cm x 190.5 cm 121.9 cm x 203.2 cm |
RV Short Queen | 60” x 74” 60” x 75” | 152.4 cm x 188.0 cm 152.4 cm x 190.5 cm |
RV Queen | 60” x 80” | 152.4 cm x 203.2 cm |
Olympic Queen | 66” x 80” | 167.6 cm x 203.2 cm |
RV Short King | 72″ X 75″ | 182.8 cm x 190.5 cm |
RV King | 72” x 80” | 182.8 cm x 203.2 cm |
Eastern King | 76” x 80” | 193.0 cm x 203.2 cm |
RV California King | 72” x 84” | 182.8 cm x 213.3 cm |
Please note that RV mattress sizes differ from standard mattress sizes to accommodate the diverse spaces in a recreational vehicle (usually narrower or shorter), so the same thing happens with toppers. But some standard mattress topper sizes can still be used perfectly in an RV as long as they fit with your current bed.
There is still the case you’re unable to find a single topper that fits your mattress, then you should consider grabbing a trimmable mattress topper that could be cut to size.
Thickness
Mattress toppers are available in varying thickness sizes, ranging from 1 to 4 inches. You can also find some special mattress toppers that are 5 or 6 inches thick as well. The thicker the mattress toppers are, the more expensive they will be. So it’s best to choose the right thickness for your needs when looking for a mattress topper.
When choosing thickness for your mattress toppers, it is important to take your current mattress’s condition into consideration. For mattresses that already have good padding, it is recommended to use a mattress topper with a thickness of 1 to 2 inches. If your mattress is particularly worn out or hard, a topper that is 2 to 3 inches thick is the way to go as these provide more cushioning, body support, and better protection for the mattress.
Regarding the needs for body support, toppers above 2 inches thick are enough to provide adequate support by aligning the spine and targeting pressure points.
Another factor to determine the topper thickness is your weight and sleeping position. Those that weigh between 130 to 230 pounds tend to be most comfortable on 2-3 inch thick toppers, while heavy people who weigh more than 230 pounds typically prefer toppers of 4 inches and higher for better support.
To find your ideal mattress topper thickness, please check your weight and your style of sleep and compare with the chart below:
Sleeping position | Weight range | Ideal thickness |
Back | Less than 130 lbs | 1.5” – 2.5” |
130 to 230 lbs | 2” – 3” | |
More than 230 lbs | 3” – 4” | |
Stomach | Less than 130 lbs | 1” – 1.5” |
130 to 230 lbs | 2” | |
More than 230 lbs | 3”- 4” | |
Side | Less than 130 lbs | 1” – 2” |
130 to 230 lbs | 2” – 2.5” | |
More than 230 lbs | 4” |
You also need to note that along with the increase in topper thickness, heat retention also increases. Therefore, you have to go over the weather, humidity, temperature, and so on before buying one.
Firmness
Figuring out which firmness to choose for your mattress topper can be super tricky. Everyone experiences the firmness of a mattress/mattress topper slightly differently. As with any feel factor, it’s subjective, and your personal preference can change a lot depending on your size, shape, and body weight.
Similar to mattress, the easiest way to evaluate the mattress topper firmness is by using a scale from 1-10, with 1 being the softest mattress topper and 10 being the firmest mattress topper. There are 5 main levels of mattress topper firmness listed as below:
Firmness Levels | Firmness Scale | Description |
Extra Soft | 1-2 | Incredibly soft. The beds with this scale of firmness are very rare and almost unsleepable as they offer too much sinkage. |
Soft | 3-4 | Sometimes referred to as a plush mattress topper. With noticeable sinkage, the mattress toppers with this firmness are best for side sleepers. |
Medium Firm | 5-6 | This is the most common and perferred firmness range for mattresses and mattress toppers on the market. Right in the middle of soft and firm, with some minor sink and contouring. Medium firmness mattress toppers combine the advantages of both firm and soft mattress toppers. This firmness level is good for all sleeping positions. |
Firm | 7-8 | Very firm and solid, with little softness and sink, can provide heavier sleepers with additional support. |
Extra Firm | 9-10 | This is the firmest you can go. Beds with this firmness are sometimes used for heavy-weight sleepers for corresponding support. |
Please also note that firmness and support are not the same term, though they are closely related. A firmer mattress/mattress topper doesn’t mean more support provided. Firmness refers to the immediate feeling you experience when first lying down on a mattress topper.
Support, on the other hand, indicates how well the mattress topper keeps your spine in alignment. Therefore, you can find a soft topper which offers a lot of support and a firm one with virtually no support at all.
Sleeping Position
Another important factor to consider when looking for a mattress topper is your sleeping position. This is much the same as when shopping for a new mattress. You’ll need to select your RV mattress topper in kind based on which types of sleeper you are: a side sleeper, back sleeper, or a stomach sleeper and what kinds of support you need for a comfortable and healthy sleep.
Side sleeping:
Side sleeping is the most popular sleep position. More than 60% of sleepers prefer resting on their side. This sleep posture can promote healthy spinal alignment, reduce lower back aches and pains, minimize sleep apnea symptoms such as snoring, heartburn, etc.
Side sleepers would do best with a soft and plush mattress topper which allows them to sink into the mattress topper to contour the shoulders and hips and relieve pressure.
Back sleeping:
Back sleeping is proved to be the best sleeping position for natural spine support. As the second-most popular position, supine sleeping offers several obvious benefits.
Lying on your back on a supportive mattress can help to relieve the congestion of a stuffy nose or allergies, reduce chronic hip or back pain, and even facial wrinkling.
An ideal mattress topper for back sleepers is one that’s supportive enough to keep the spine aligned but soft enough to prevent pressure buildup. The more weight you have, the firmer your mattress topper should be to give you enough comfort when you’re flat on your back.
Stomach sleeping:
Stomach sleeping is the least favored position among American sleepers. Only around 17% of the population have the habit of sleeping on the stomach. Experts generally discourage this sleeping position because the typical stomach sleeper tends to face physical issues like poor spine support, neck misalignment and facial wrinkling.
When sleeping on your stomach, you need to keep your head facing one side all the time, invariably twist your head and neck out of alignment with the rest of your spine.
So if you’re a stomach sleeper, opt for a firm mattress topper. If your mattress and mattress topper are not firm enough, your hips and stomach will sink into the bed, stretching your spine out of alignment uncomfortably.
Combination, or multi-positional sleepers:
These sleepers tend to switch their sleeping postures during sleeping time. The key factor combination sleepers need in order to switch positions easily is a responsive mattress which can isolate and reduce motion transfer.
If your current mattress is not responsive enough, consider adding a latex mattress topper for your RV. Latex is inherently springy and highly responsive, and adapts to your movements easily.
Motion Isolation
After lying down on the mattress, many people toss and tumble to get into a comfortable position. If you sleep by yourself, you don’t have to worry about anything but if you sleep with others, your movements may disturb them.
Hence, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for mattress toppers with motion isolation. Toppers that isolate motion would let you turn and roll to your heart’s content without waking up your close ones.
Noise Reduction
With people tossing and tumbling, mattresses inevitably let out a couple of sounds from time to time. For RVers that have a sensitive sense of hearing, the sounds could prevent them from having a good night’s sleep.
In the case that you have a sound concern, you need to give noise reduction some thought while checking out mattress toppers. For your information, products consisting of latex or memory foam work wonders at reducing noise.
Antibacterial And Odor-Fighting
You tend to visit regions with a high level of humidity? Then you need to prioritize mattress toppers that have antibacterial and odor-fighting properties.
Such toppers rely on green tea extract, activated charcoal, natural plant oils… to keep bacteria and odor under control. With bacteria and odor out of the picture, you should be able to fall asleep easily on the road.
Fitness
The fitness of a mattress topper dictates the ease of holding it on top of the mattress. If your topper fits the mattress snugly, it’s going to sit still throughout the night.
On the other hand, if your topper barely fits the mattress, it may slide away as soon as you make a move. Because of that, you need to keep fitness in mind as you look for the best mattress topper for RV.
Endurance
Also, you’ll need to take into account the durability: how long does an RV mattress topper last?
To see how well a topper holds together as time passes by, it’s widely advised that you evaluate the material, design, technologies, … In addition, you may want to take a look at the features of the toppers.
For instance, if you own a waterproof product, you don’t have to worry about liquid spills running your topper.
Budget
And last but not least, it’s your budget.
$70 – $140: Versatile and flexible, toppers in the range perform well despite the lack of fancy features. Furthermore, owing to their affordability, products with price tags between $70 and $140 prove popular among cost-conscious camper owners.
$140 – $180: Able to meet all sorts of demands but don’t cost an arm and a leg, toppers in the range provide great value for the price. You wish to buy a solid mattress topper but cannot spend big bucks? In that case, you should stick to products that cost from $140 to $180.
Above $180: Being high-end products, toppers in the range seldom let people down on the road. While they seem kind of expensive, toppers with price tags exceeding $180 last for years which allow RVers to save money in the long run.
How To Keep An RV Mattress Topper From Sliding
Toppers sliding away from the bed is one of the most annoying issues that people could experience in the middle of the night. Still, by taking a number of measures, you would have an easy time holding your mattress topper in place.
Non-Skid Mats
Originally, people set up non-skid mats in areas with high risk of slipping such as kitchens, bathrooms and others. By using non-skid mats to increase friction between your mattress and its topper, everything should stay exactly where you put them.
Velcros (Touch Fasteners)
Thanks to the outstanding adaptability, Velcros easily secure toppers to mattresses in a lot of setups. You simply have to attach Velcros to your topper then connect them to the mattresses.
Carpet Tape
Once it comes to preventing carpets from sliding all over the floor, various people resort to carpet tape. If you have a couple rolls of carpet tape lying around, you should use them to hold the topper in place. All you have to do is to place carpet tape along the edges and sides of the mattress and the topper.
DIY Anchor Bands
In the case that you have spare elastic bands, feel free to use them to improvise “anchors”. Attach the bands to each corner of your mattress topper to stop it from moving out of position.
A Tightly Fitted Sheet
If your topper features smooth surfaces that offer little friction, you must think about covering it under a tightly fitted sheet. The sheet is going to restrict the movement of the topper and keep sliding to the minimum.
Sheet Suspenders
At a glance, sheet suspenders resemble elastic bands with clips on both ends. Using sheet suspenders, you should be able to tightly wrap the sheet around the topper and put an end to the sliding.
Safety Pins
Safety pins excel at holding mattress toppers in place but they increase the odds of tearing as well. As a result, if you use safety pins to secure your topper, make sure to use an equal number of pins on each side. At the very least, place four pins per side to distribute the pressure evenly.
Duct Tapes
All in all, there is nothing special about duct tapes but they get the job done. Nonetheless, if you tape your mattress to its topper, you could limit the sliding to a certain extent.
Headboard And Footboard
Your mattress topper touches the top and bottom of your bed? Then you should attach a headboard and a footboard to your bed to secure the topper.
So, Which is the Best Camper Mattress Topper?
If you’re looking for an RV mattress topper with a specific need like the best mattress topper for each sleeping position, for heavy people or for those who suffer from body aches and pains, here are our recommendations:
What is the best RV mattress topper for side sleepers?
When resting on your side, your weight is concentrated in the shoulder and hip areas. As a result, side sleepers tend to have issues with their back and joints. If you’re a side sleeper looking for a comfortable mattress topper which can alleviate that problem, here are a few things to keep in mind before making a purchase:
Thickness: Thicker mattress toppers will work best for side sleepers. Something between 3-4 inches should add the softness for your current mattress while still keeping your spine aligned.
Firmness: Sleeping on your side can place more tension on the neck, shoulders, and hips. For that reason, side sleepers generally require a mattress topper offering good contouring around the hips and shoulders to relieve the pressure from these areas and keep the spine aligned. So for side sleepers, we highly recommend opting for a soft/plush mattress topper (with the firmness scale of 4/10) as it’ll help to reduce the pressure and prevent you from sinking deeply while sleeping.
Material: Side sleepers should prioritize memory foam mattress toppers as these will be durable enough to support your body weight.
Editor’s Recommendation:
For side sleepers, we would recommend LUCID Ventilated Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper. It has a perfect supportive thickness of 3 inches. Made from ventilated gel memory foam, this plush and airy topper can add pressure-relieving comfort and softness to your mattress at the shoulders, hips and knees making it absolutely perfect for side sleepers. With the special memory foam infused with a plush gel material, this mattress topper can capture the heat efficiently. This prevents side sleepers from being too hot at night while sinking into this thick mattress topper.
What is the best RV mattress topper for back sleepers?
Sleeping on your back can make it easier to keep everything well aligned. But in the case your current mattress is too soft, it may also increase the risk of lower back pain. Let’s check out the following criteria when choosing a mattress topper for side sleepers:
Thickness: A mattress topper between 2–3 inches thick is perfect for back sleeping campers as this will ensure you don’t sink too far into the bed, which could otherwise throw off spinal alignment and create pressure in the lower back.
Firmness: When you lie on your back, your weight is evenly distributed, which makes any mattress firmness could work for you. But ideally, back sleepers will need medium-firm beds (4-6/10 on the firmness scale) because they provide spinal support as well as pressure relief. Those who are a bit heavier than average may want to choose a firmer mattress topper, whereas lighter people should pick a slightly softer topper.
Material: When it comes to back sleeping, memory foam and latex are the most suitable materials. While sleeping on mattress toppers made of these 2 materials, the weight of the sleepers will be distributed equally through a large surface area.
Editor’s Recommendation:
If you’re a back sleeper, Pure Green Natural Medium Firm Latex is the most ideal option.
ViscoSoft Memory Foam Mattress Topper is another great RV topper for you to sink into. This topper has a thickness of 3 inches which is perfect for supporting your back while you sleep. Made by high-density memory foam, this mattress topper does a great job of providing excellent lumbar support.
What is the best RV mattress topper for stomach sleepers?
Sleeping on your front may make your spine sag from its neutral position because majority of your body weight is at your core. With this sleeping position, your upper body sinks into the mattress deeper than your head and limbs. This is the main cause for back pain of RV campers who sleep on their stomach. If you really can’t change this sleeping posture right away, buying a mattress topper which meets the following criteria will support you best:
Thickness: Because it is difficult to maintain a neutral spine in the right position while sleeping on your stomach, it’s not recommended to add toppers with thick, cushy layer. This might generate more pressure on your neck and hips. A thin topper will be your better solution. Generally, stomach sleepers should be opting for a mattress topper between 1–2 inches thick.
Firmness: A medium-firm or firm would be the ideal mattress topper firmness for stomach sleepers. This means you should be choosing a mattress topper with the firmness scale ranging from 5 to 8. A firm mattress seems uncomfortable at the beginning, but for campers who prefer sleeping on the stomach, it is actually perfect to keep your spine aligned.
Material: Stomach sleepers should prioritize mattress toppers made from memory foam or latex. These softer and malleable mattress toppers will hold your body well and ensure you’re not sinking too far into the bed, as this can cause misalignment issues.
Editor’s Recommendation:
As mentioned on the review part, Amazon Basics Cooling Gel-Infused Latex Firm is an excellent choice for stomach sleepers.
The ZINUS 1.5 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress Topper is my another go-to pick for RV campers who prefer sleeping on their front. This topper has the right amount of firmness that will fit the density requirements that stomach sleepers need. The perfect thickness of 1.5” will prevent your stomach and hips from sinking too far into the mattress which lowers the risk of back pain. Plus, this memory foam mattress topper also comes with natural additives like green tea, charcoal oil to get rid of unwanted odors.
What is the best RV mattress topper for heavy people?
Campers who weigh over 230 pounds tend to generate more pressure on their beds, resulting in greater potential for sinkage which prevents them from sleeping comfortably. To solve that, heavy campers need to choose the right mattress topper which matches their body weight in terms of thickness, density, firmness and the materials used.
Thickness: Go for a mattress topper with a thickness of 3-4 inches if you are a heavy person. This thickness level not only changes the feel of your current mattress but also provides adequate support for your hefty body. A mattress topper with more than 4 inches thick can be used for heavy individuals if the topper is the firm one.
Density: The density influences the weight-bearing ability of a mattress topper. A higher density mattress topper will provide more support which a heavy person needs to have a restful sleep. So if you’re an overweight sleeper, look for a topper/mattress pad with a density rating higher or equal to 4 pounds per cubic foot.
Firmness: Most individuals in this category need a slightly firmer mattress to provide added support and prevent them from sinking into the bed’s support core. If you’re a heavy sleeper, we recommend buying a mattress topper in the medium firm to firm range (6-8/10 on the firmness scale). While side sleepers usually feel more comfortable with softer toppers, stomach sleepers will need a firmer unit for some extra support.
Material: Latex mattress toppers work best for heavier campers as this type of topper can offer resilient support while bearing the constant pressure of a heavy body. Sleeping on mattress toppers made of this material, the sleeper’s weight is spread over a wider surface area, thus limiting sinkage which helps overweight sleepers change sleeping positions or get up from the bed easier. Foam toppers may also work, but they need to be dense enough to prevent unwanted sinkage in each sleep position.
Editor’s Recommendation:
For heavy people, we would recommend Amazon Basics Cooling Gel-Infused Latex Firm Topper. With firm-feel latex, the mattress topper will hold you well. Regardless of sleeper’s weight, the body will rest right on the surface without sinking in too much, providing a restful sleep for overweight sleepers.
What is the best RV mattress topper for hip/back pain?
Pure Green Natural Latex Medium Firm Mattress Topper works best for those who are suffering from hip or back pain. This medium firm feel topper can add pinpointed support to the mattress while still retaining the overall firmness level of the mattress. This is most ideal for back sleepers who have chronic aches and pains in neck and back when waking up in the morning.
FAQs About RV Mattress Toppers
1. Do mattress toppers really work?
Well our answer is YES. Especially when you want to soften your mattress and get some extra pressure relief, a mattress topper is the way to go.
2. What thickness RV mattress topper should I get?
Generally, mattress toppers come in 2 inch thickness or 3 inch thickness and it really depends on how much pressure relief you need. If you’re a side sleeper and you are feeling some pressure on your shoulders, opt for a 3-inch mattress topper. But if you don’t need that much pressure relief a 2-inch topper will be just fine and it definitely comes with a more affordable price.
The thickness of your camper mattress toppers also depends on your weight. Two inches would be enough for those that have the average weight. If you weigh around one hundred and fifty pounds, go for toppers with a thickness between 3 and 4 inches.
3. Who makes the best RV mattress toppers?
If you’re not familiar with RV bedding products and would like to take the safest bet when shopping for the best camper mattress topper, it is generally recommended that you start with mattress toppers offered by major manufacturers that have earned their reputation over the years.
The prestigious manufacturers of RV mattress toppers include Zinus, Lucid, Linenspa, Classic Brands, Best Price Mattress. The toppers from these makers are overall in good quality: well-constructed and long-lasting. Besides, the customer service of the mentioned brands is well-developed which is handy when things go wrong or you need any urgent support.
Of course, browsing through customer reviews will help you identify the superstar among good options by these big brands and only you know which one is best fit for your preferences and feel.
4. Does an RV mattress topper go under the sheet?
Mattress toppers stay on top of mattresses and under bed sheets. Interestingly, the camper mattress pad also slides under the sheet but it’s not the same as the mattress topper for RV.
5. Which is better: RV mattress pad or topper?
It depends on what you desire. Owing to the variable thickness, mattress toppers provide excellent support to many body builds. On the other hand, the thickness of mattress pads seldom exceeds one inch so they can only apply minor adjustments to mattresses. It’s noteworthy that a lot of RVers use mattress pads to add an extra layer of protection against contaminants, liquid spills, etc.
6. Is it possible to use a topper as a mattress?
Made to be used with mattresses, toppers won’t work well as mattress replacements. Since they have thin construction, toppers cannot adequately support the body of sleepers by themselves. Because of that, it’s ill-advised to use toppers as substitutes for mattresses.
7. How do I clean a mattress topper/pad?
The right methods of cleaning mattress toppers depends on how dirty they are.
If you only need to refresh and deodorize, vacuuming your mattress topper using a handheld vacuum cleaner and a simple baking soda cleaning will suffice. If there’s a liquid spill, you may need to spot clean your mattress topper with a gentle cleaning agent like white vinegar or an enzyme cleaner and clean towel. It is best not to drench the foam and always use a mattress protector to prevent any liquids from penetrating.
In any case, it is best to avoid using harsh cleaning agents, as they can discolor and even damage the delicate foams and other fill materials used in mattress toppers.
While some types of mattress toppers are machine washable, we do not recommend machine washing mattress toppers especially those made of memory foam. A washing machine can cause shrinkage and reduce the lifespan of the foam mattress topper.
8. How to store a mattress topper?
Like cleaning, you need to be careful as you store your mattress topper and refer to the owner’s manual. For typical products, it’s a good idea to vacuum, wash and dry them prior to storage. In addition to that, you should put your topper into a bag to keep it out of harm’s way. If the situation allows, feel free to vacuum the storage bag to save space inside the interior.
9. How to get a fitting topper?
To ensure that your topper fits snugly, you must collect the measurements of your mattress. By using the numbers as references, you should be able to decide which product on the market fits your mattress most.
In the case that you want some leeway, you could get a topper that is a bit bigger than your mattress. When a need arises, you always have the option of trimming your mattress topper here and there for optimal fitness.
10. How long does an RV mattress topper last?
The average lifespan of mattress toppers is 3 to 5 years. The mattress topper longevity will depend on several factors such as material, quality, care, the weight being put on it, frequency of use and more.
Poor quality products may only last a year or two, until they stop providing the support needed, even if they are carefully maintained. A good quality product that is made from durable materials should last anything up to 7-10 years.
11. How long does it take for a memory foam mattress topper to fully expand?
A memory foam mattress topper takes around 24–72 hours to decompress fully. It takes only about 4-6 hours to expand up to 90% in, and requires a lot more hours to complete the expansion. Therefore, it is advised to wait 24 hours before sleeping on a mattress topper.
To stimulate the decompression cycle, you can roll on or gently walk across the topper.
12. Why is the mattress topper slightly smaller than my mattress?
The mattress topper is made a bit smaller than the mattress of the same size because they tend to spread out with use and shouldn’t hang over the edge. This intentional design helps to avoid pulling or tearing the mattress topper while getting out of bed.
Thanks for the information, Definitely helpful.
I bought a converted 2019 Ford Transit 250 that has tatami mats on top of benches for sleeping. Would like to add an RV Queen topper but would need to be able to roll it up lengthwise during the day. Therefore, a 2″ topper wold probably me a max size since I’d be stretching it to fit it into a ~20″ x 8-1/2″ space under some cabinets. Without seeing this set up, would you offer any thoughts on making that work and having something that will “reflate” after laying it back out every night?
Thanks in advance, Rick
Hi Rick and thanks for your comment. To be honest, it’s hard to find an RV mattress topper queen size which is foldable. Instead, you can consider finding a portable sleeping pad or a tri folding mattress so that you can roll it up or fold it during the day for storage.
Thanks for sharing! I actually enjoyed your article as a result of it had been useful and interesting.
I bought a Zinus mattress to put on top of the mattress that came with the trailer from the store. I was short on space when the trailer was closed so I didn’t go thicker than 1.5″. A really nice improvement over the original mattress! I bought one for each bed. Can be used on top of an air mattress for added comfort. Arrived on time as promised. It unfolded easily and I followed the instructions to let it air out before putting a mattress cover and sheet on top. The grandkids loved the comfort too so it was a winner for us!
